The Estate
A quiet corner of Tuscany,
lived in slowly.
Between Siena and the vineyards of the Chianti Classico, a working farm
of vines, olives and old stone - kept, and shared, with care.
Pensieri is Italian for „thoughts”.
The name is a promise: that here, life returns
to its simplest and truest measure.
Pensieri is an old Tuscan tenuta in the hills above Pianella, in the commune
of Castelnuovo Berardenga. In 2019 the estate was thoroughly restored to
a design by Studio Milani: the houses of Pensieri di Sotto and di Sopra regained
their character, and the vineyard and gardens were laid out anew. We never
wanted it to be a hotel. We wanted a home that opens its doors — where guests
eat what the land gives, drink what we grow, and fall, quietly, in love with these hills.
Terroir
Twenty hectares of vine,
olive and wood.
The estate lies at 250–300 metres, in the hills of southern Chianti Classico. Sangiovese grows on the warm terraces — seven hectares of vines in all; centuries-old olives silver the slopes; above them, the oak wood keeps its own counsel. We farm all of it organically, by hand where hands are needed, letting the year write itself into every bottle and every tin of oil that leaves the house.

A Year on the Estate
Getting to know this place is witnessing its transformation. Each season has
its work, colour, and table.
Spring
Spring
The first greenery appears along the rows, and the hills soften with wild grasses and poppies. The vines are tied up, and bees return to the almond blossoms.
Summer
Summer
Long, golden afternoons under the cicadas. The grapes swell in the heat, the pool is warm at noon, and dinner awaits the cool of the evening.
Autumn
Autumn
Harvest time. The entire estate shifts into harvest mode — grapes are hand-picked at dawn, olives soon after, and the scent of new wine fills the cellar.
Winter
Winter
Fog in the valley, fires in the hearth, vines pruned to their bare architecture. The earth rests, and the wine sleeps in the darkness of the cellar.
Our philosophy
How we keep the place
01
Of this place, only
Everything on the table is grown, pressed, poured or gathered within sight of the house. The estate feeds itself, and then its guests.
02
Farmed, not manufactured
Organic vineyards and groves, wild yeasts, hand-picking, no shortcuts. We work with the year we are given rather than against it.
03
Time, given generously
The Vin Santo waits four years in its casks; lunch waits as long as it likes. Nothing here is hurried, least of all the days you spend with us.
The hosts
A house with
its hosts still in it.
You will meet us — in the vineyard at first light, in the kitchen before dinner, on the terrace as the hills turn gold. This is not a performance of Tuscan life; it is the working day of the estate, and for a while it is yours as well. That, more than anything, is what we hope you take home: not a room or a meal, but the memory of a place that felt, however briefly, like your own.
